Gum disease is a common dental condition that almost anyone had experienced and it is being indicated by red swollen gums and gums that bleed easily when brushing. There are two stages of gum disease, gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is its mildest form and periodontitist is the advance stage. If gingivitis is left untreated persistent swollen gums and bleeding gums occur. The bleeding and swollen of gums is a result of inflammation brought by excessive plaque accumulation. Fighting the bacteria that causes swollen gums and gum disease is an effective way of controlling the spread of gum infection.

Good oral hygiene is one way of preventing bacteria build up in the mouth, dental visits are necessary to check unrecognizable symptoms of gum diseases.

It is normal to experience a little discomfort after a periodontal surgery, gums may even bleed and swell 24 hours after the surgery. Hard, crunchy and difficult to chew foods should be avoided and liquid intake should be increased. Smoking retards the healing process after a periodontal surgery and it should be avoided. Alcohol tends to make the mouth dry and may trigger gum disease to recur. Normal physical activities may be done, however strenuous ones should take place after the healing period for swelling and bleeding will persist if vigorous and strenuous activities are done. Superior oral hygiene should be practice after surgery to achieve effective results.

There are possible links between gum infections and other disease throughout the body. Studies imply that there may be a link between gum diseases, heart disease and other health conditions and they suggest that gum infection may be more serious risk factor for heart disease than hypertension, cholesterol, smoking, age and gender. People who have gum infection have a greater risk for heart attacks and stroke. Our oral health affects our overall health thus paying attention to our oral health can prevent gum infection and certain medical conditions that is linked with it.

The best thing to do is to have proper oral health care by keeping the mouth healthy. Seeing your dentist at least twice a year for dental maintenance must be observed diligently. Gum disease is a serious gum infection and should be taken seriously and should not be ignored. Symptoms of gum infection are often unrecognizable, pay attention to red, inflamed gums and that bleeds easily. Proper oral health care starts by eliminating plaque and it can be achieved through regular brushing and flossing, it is one way of reducing the risk of gum infection and gum disease.
